The photonics sensors industry has witnessed significant growth over the years with the growing usage of sensors across a variety of industrial sectors including security, healthcare, telecom, environment, biotechnology, and others. And considering the potential these solutions hold to perform detecting and sensing functions and their ability to ensure a high return on investment, LDI Innovation has been marching unreservedly toward diversifying the use of photonics solutions across industries. Ever since, the company has extended the photonics solutions’ applications to biosecurity, safety, and healthcare abiding by its motto - “Photonics solutions for diverse applications.” LDI Innovation was founded in 2013 to continue the technological innovation in photonics sensing and address its new applications. One significant step in that direction is the toolbox created by the company, which allows the optimal integration of the main sub-systems for photonics sensing and fine-tuning of their cooperation to address the specified application. The toolbox comprises the UV-VIS spectral detection sub-systems ranging from discrete channel PDs- and SIPM based photodetectors to the gated hyperspectral cameras, and a set of monochromatic UV-light source sub-systems utilizing either single- or multiple LEDs, and flash lamps, or compact excimer lasers CEX-100™.

The company offers a variety of high-end products that are based on the techniques of the Hyperspectral Laser Induced Fluorescence (HLIF) and Spectral Fluorescence Signatures (SFS).

The HLIF LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems are aimed at the stand-off detection of biological and chemical targets and help locating the oil spills on water and ground, facilitate remote detection and classification of biohazards, offer early warning of algae blooms, ensure vegetation stress monitoring in agriculture, and so on. These systems witness extensive usage for real-time data sampling, processing, and communication and have been designed in such a way that they can be used onboard moving vehicles, including cars, vessels, drones, or aircrafts. The other key offerings in LDI Innovation’s portfolio include SFS-Probe™, SFS-Cube™, and SFS-Go™ analyzers. They are used for rapid and direct identification of the chemical and biological targets in liquid or solid matrixes, based on the spectral response of the object to the multiple sensing wavelengths. Most importantly, SFS analyzers can operate in the field bringing the capability of an analytical laboratory directly onsite with instant response. “These devices have proved their efficiency for rapid monitoring in various environments, including bio-chemical security, food products safety, microbial and viral contamination of the surfaces, and even the inspection of the objects of cultural heritage such as buildings and fragile frescoes,” adds Babichenko.

Considering the existing trends in the sensing landscape, LDI Innovation extracts the simplified application-specific sensors from high-end and versatile products to make them simpler, more affordable without compromising on the sensing quality. This appropriately defines how the LDI Innovation team developed the oil leaks industrial monitor Blue-Hawk™ and the hand-held bio-detector H2B-Spectral™, the two key offerings in its product range.

Ever since its inception, the LDI Innovation team has developed various application-specific sensors for clients across the globe. One example in specific is that of a project where the LDI Innovation team, at the first responders’ request, cooperated with the Centre for Applied Molecular Technologies (UCL-CTMA, Brussels, Belgium) to develop the non-contact hand-held bio-detector H2B™. It is a selective point inspection tool for bio-cleanness control that was successfully introduced and well-accepted during the field exercise “Bio Garden” of the European Network of CBRN Training Centres.

LDI Innovation has had many such successful projects with several leading names including Airbus D&S, DLR, MIT, Total, SYKE, Gastops Inc, Dakota Technologies Inc, and NOAA, among others. Most of LDI Innovation’s sensors and sensing systems are IoT-ready providing real-time data sampling and analysis, and most importantly, can be operated unattended and continuously, when needed, and work as network devices. This capability along with the fact that LDI Innovation’s sensors ensure the non-contact data sampling from the object which is critical when detecting hazardous agents makes the company stand apart.
